Betty Jane Wilhelm spent nearly sixty years collecting the finest and most dramatic of Mother Nature's creations, including minerals, fossils, and sea creatures. She created many fine items of jewelry from the semi-precious stone she collected. and also cut and polished hundreds of pieces of petrified wood and geodes, the likes of which may only be found in museums. Many are on display at the gallery.
Additionally, she was a talented water colorist, and also worked in oils. A special show of her paintings will be scheduled in the gallery in the coming months.
Ms. Wilhelm was a full professor at San Diego State University and a fifty-year resident of San Diego. She passed away in 2004, and her incredible collection passed to Karen Ryer, her cousin. When Ryer began her own artistic endeavours in stone, Wilhelm, a life-long supporter of the arts, supported her, and helped fund the opening of Withywindle Gallery. The gallery will be privileged to permanently display Ms. Wilhelm's work and many of her collections.
